Blackberry soda, pizza, ice cream, and s'mores.

Brace yourselves! This will be an extremely long post.
Last Sunday, I made blackberry soda which was surprisingly good. Again, it was an experiment and I didn't use a recipe. The only problem was that I forgot to add sugar, but after adding it everything was fine.

Blackberry Lime Soda
4 cups club soda
1 pint blackberries
2 large limes
3/4 cup granulated sugar
16 mint leaves
2-3 tbs. superfine sugar
1 egg white

Put blackberries in a pot over medium heat until mush (what other word could I use?). Strain into a pitcher and discard seeds and other remnants. Juice limes and put one lime skin into pitcher. Pour club soda and sugar into pitcher and stir until sugar dissolves. Place pitcher in fridge for 30 minutes. After 10 minutes, remove lime skins and discard. Beat egg white until foamy, almost stiff. Lay mint leaves on a sheet coated in wax paper and brush egg whites on both sides. Dip leaves in sugar, thoroughly coated. Place sheet in an oven set on warm until dry. Put a few ice cubes in glasses and pour a half cup of soda in each. Lay mint leaves on top. Enjoy!

On the fifteenth my family and I went to Serious Pie in Seattle. Yes, I have mentioned the place. We ordered three different pizzas: Sweet Fennel Sausage, Roasted peppers, and provolone; yukon gold potato, rosemary, and pecorino; and cascade fiddleheads, pancetta, and roasted garlic. Let me say that this was the best pizza ever. I also wore my Serious pie. t-shirt and got a few comments. Does that go on my résumé? Before I wrap this part up, I just wanna say again that the pizza was AMAZING.

We were going to Dahlia afterwards (which is right next door) but my favorite-est chef ever, Chef Brock, was in New York. C'mon, dude, didn't you remember my birthday?! ;) Don't worry man, I'm just kidding. Instead we went to Theno's Dairy, an ice cream place up in Redmond. I couldn't decide what flavor to get! There are so many different flavors there, all handmade. I always sample at least one flavor, but don't ask me why. It's like a tradition for my sister and me. Finally, I decided on French Apple. Man oh man, is it good! All of the flavors are!

While we were at Serious Pie eating our fava bean crostini, I came up with an idea for s'mores crostini! Don't try this recipe until I really ok it. I don't wanna give any of you a sugar high or something. If you want to recipe test this for me you can shoot me a comment because I'm not sure whether I'll be able to get around to making it for a few weeks.

S'mores Crostini
6 pieces chocolate biscotti
1 cup plus 2 tbs. marshmallow fluff
2 whole graham crackers
1/2 plus 2 tbs. cup chocolate chips
1 tbs. salted butter

Combine the 2 tbs. chocolate chips, butter, and graham crackers in a food processor and process until coarse. Set aside. Melt chocolate chips until smooth. Spoon 3 tbs. of marshmallow fluff onto each piece of biscotti and torch until golden. Sprinkle graham cracker and chocolate mixture on top of each biscotti piece and drizzle with melted chocolate. Serve and enjoy!

Have fun!

Happy Mother's Day!

Well, last night I stayed up later than normal to finish my mother's day presents. I made chocolate-chile truffles. I made a small batch, so there were only eight truffles, but they're easy to make. The longest part of the process is waiting for the chocolate to partially harden. I'll give you the recipe. I don't know the exact measurements, considering I didn't use a recipe, but I'll estimate. I eyed everything...

Chocolate Chile Truffles

1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
3 tbs. dutch-processed cocoa powder
1/2-1 tsp. chile powder (depending on your own preferences)

Melt the chocolate in the microwave in a microwave-safe bowl or melt it in the top of a double-boiler. When it's completely melted, put it in the fridge until partially hardened, about 10-15 minutes. Mix the cocoa powder with chile powder in a small bowl. With a melon baller, scoop out hunks of chocolate and shape them into spheres. Roll the balls in the cocoa powder mixture then place them on a sheet of wax paper. Put them again in the fridge until they are completely hardened.

Really easy, right? Shoot me a comment if you make 'em!
Happy Mother's Day and Have Fun!

A Taste of the South... further down than you think

In a couple weeks I'm taking a trip down to the Caribbean for vacation and for a little taste of Caribbean culture. I want to know more about their lifestyle, their music, art, language, and history. Okay, you got me. All I really want to learn about is their food! Where I'm going, the people eat a lot of coconut, turtle, and conch. Seafood is its own food group down there! I'm excited to know about how these traditional foods are prepared and served. Also, every food has a back story, whether it's the square patties at Wendy's or the potato pizza at Serious Pie. I'm so excited!
