Title: The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake
Author: Aimee Bender
Pages: 304
Nine-year-old Rose Edelstein discovers her ability to taste people's emotions in the food that they cook when her mother bakes her a lemon-chocolate cake for her birthday. Rose can taste her mother's sadness, worry, stress, and guilt in her food over the next decade. She uncovers her family's secrets, such as her mother's affair with a mysterious man, her father's separation from the family, her brother's constant privacy. Rose keeps it a secret as much as she can, except from George, her brother's charming, sweet friend.
I would really recommend this book to those who love food, who love drama, and who love science-fiction-without-being-creepy. Is that a genre?
The one part I didn't get was the end. If you don't want me to ruin it, don't look at the next paragraph.
I'll give you a second to look away.
Ready? Okay.
What happened to Joseph and the chair? Was his leg gone? Am I missing something?
Okay. I'm done.
So I think it's 3.5 stars. Read it!
Happy Thursday.
Oh, I forgot. It's also Cow Appreciation Day. Hug a cow!
Lexie
p.s. It's also Tapioca Pudding Day. Feed tapioca to a cow?
